Kamela Cubillos
(k - am - /e/ - la) (Coo - be - jos)

Kamela Cubillos, born in 2001 in Southern California, is an artist currently based in New York, where she will be receiving her BFA from SUNY Purchase College in Spring of 2025. Working primarily in photography, video, performance, and sculpture, Cubillos’ practice is rooted in exploring themes of queerness, the female body, and liberation. Her current work revisits analog photography, using a 35mm Canon F-1 to shoot her senior thesis project—a deeply personal body of work that ties back to the very reason she began photographing: to free herself from the societal expectations placed upon her. Through this evolving series, she combines photography, film, and performance to question and redefine how the body interacts with space—how it can be both bound and liberated, connected and fragmented. With each frame, Cubillos challenges conventional narratives, offering a nuanced exploration of identity, autonomy, and transformation.
